Mumbai (Correspondent): The government has now made it mandatory for all types of vehicles to be equipped with High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). A campaign is currently underway across the state to install these plates on all vehicles registered before 2019. Initially, the deadline for this was set as March 30, 2025. However, with just ten days left for the deadline to expire, the government has now extended the timeframe. An official circular has been issued regarding this extension.
What is the Government’s Stand on the Extension?
According to the circular issued by the state government, an explanation has been provided as to why this extension was necessary. The circular states that all old vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, were required to install HSRP number plates by March 31, 2025. However, the process of fitting HSRP plates on older vehicles has been significantly slow. Due to this, the deadline has now been extended to June 30, 2025, to ensure compliance.
In light of this extension, all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Deputy RTOs have been instructed to intensify awareness campaigns within their respective jurisdictions. Additionally, meetings must be held with local vehicle dealers, auto-rickshaw unions, taxi operators, bus and truck associations to ensure that all stakeholders are informed about this mandate. The state government issued this extension circular on March 20, 2025.
