Nashik: Fake Cops Trick 75-Year-Old Woman, Flee with Gold Worth ₹90,000

Nashik, February 4, 2026: An incident of cheating and robbery involving impostors posing as police officers has once again come to light within the jurisdiction of the Indiranagar Police Station. Two unidentified men deceived a 75-year-old woman and fled with her gold jewellery by instilling fear under the pretext of a recent crime in the area.

The complainant, identified as Mrs. Ware (75), was walking from her residence to the Rameshwaram Mahadev Temple in Samarthnagar around 1:15 pm on Monday (February 2). As she approached the temple, an unknown man followed her and claimed to be a police officer. He then led her to another man standing nearby.

The duo falsely informed her that a woman had been stabbed ahead and warned her against wearing excessive gold jewellery, allegedly for her safety. By creating panic, they persuaded her to remove her ornaments.

When Mrs. Ware said she was unable to remove the jewellery herself, one of the accused pretended to help her. He removed a gold chain from her neck and a gold ring from her left hand, claiming he would safely wrap them in white paper. He then handed over the paper packet to her, which she placed in her purse. The impostors soon fled the spot.

Upon reaching the temple and opening the packet, Mrs. Ware discovered that it contained a stone instead of her jewellery. Realising she had been duped, she immediately lodged a complaint with the police.

According to the complaint, the stolen valuables include a black-beaded gold chain with a pendant weighing approximately 13 grams, valued at around ₹78,000, and a designer gold ring weighing about 2 grams, valued at approximately ₹12,000. The total value of the stolen jewellery is estimated at ₹90,000.

Based on the complaint, a case of robbery has been registered at the Indiranagar Police Station under Crime Register No. 47/2026, and further investigation is underway.
