Nashik: Elderly Woman Duped by Fake Cops; Jewellery Worth Over ₹2.10 Lakh Stolen

Nashik (Correspondent): In a shocking case of fraud, two imposters posing as police officers deceived an elderly woman and stole gold jewellery worth ₹2.10 lakh under the pretext of safety concerns. The incident occurred near a public garden in the Jail Road area. A case of cheating has been registered at the Upnagar Police Station.

According to police sources and the complaint filed by a 70-year-old woman residing in the Jail Road area, the incident took place at around 8 a.m. The victim had just finished her regular morning visit to the Shiv Temple and was walking home via Narayanbapu Road. As she passed near Renuka Hospital, adjacent to a public garden, she was approached by two unidentified men.

Claiming to be police officers, they warned her about a recent murder in the area related to gold theft and questioned why she was wearing so much jewellery. They instructed her to hand over her gold ornaments for safekeeping, assuring her that they would return them later. Out of fear, the woman handed over a 56-gram gold mangalsutra, 12-gram gold bangles, and a 4-gram gold ring to the suspects.

The men pretended to wrap the jewellery in a piece of paper and placed it in her purse, advising her to be cautious in the future. However, upon reaching home and checking the packet, the woman discovered it was just a wad of paper with no jewellery inside. Realizing she had been duped, she immediately approached the police.

The case is being investigated by Senior Inspector Jitendra Sapkale.
